Summary: Six scientists from the South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) - Raleigh, NC office have travelled to the Outer Banks of North Carolina today to deploy storm-tide sensors in advance of Hurricane Joaquin.
The South Atlantic WSC (SAWSC)-Raleigh office staff has traveled to the North Carolina Outer Banks in advance of Hurricane Joaquin to deploy storm-tide and wave sensors along the barrier islands. Deployment will continue along the interior coastline on Friday, October 2nd. Staff from SAWSC-Columbia office will deploy storm-tide sensors along South Carolina coast on Friday, October 2nd.
Significant deployment of staff from all across SAWSC will occur beginning Friday morning, October 2nd, in preparation of discharge measurements and sediment sampling for the QPF forecasted rainfall totals of 18+ inches in the western Carolinas. One team from the Lower-Mississippi Gulf WSC will assist in western North Carolina.
Recovery of Storm-Tide sensors will be performed by SAWSC-Norcross office staff, who will depart for coastal areas either Sunday or early Monday once the storm has passed.
Support crews for indirect measurements will depart Norcross on Monday, October 5th.
Coordination of field crews is being handled by leadership in the Norcross, Columbia, and Raleigh offices.
