Summary: Heavy localized rainfall earlier this week combined with saturated soils is causing a major category flood on portions of the East Fork White River.
A major category flood has developed overnight on the central portion of the East Fork White River. Saturated soils from sustained rainfall over the past month combined with heavy localized rains earlier this week caused a rapid increase in stage overnight. One death has already been contributed to flooding in the state Monday evening along with extensive power outages from the storms.
The USGS IN-KY Indianapolis office has a large crew out today (6 people) to measure the main channel and numerous overflows at the gage where these flood conditions are occurring. This includes a manned boat and several tethered boats utilizing hydroacoustic equipment. All gages are working properly at this time. Contact with the NWS Ohio River Forecast Center and local Weather Forecast offices affected by the flooding is ongoing.
