Summary: Flooding continues in the Ohio/Missouri/Mississippi River Basins with more rain predicted.
Flooding continues in the Ohio/Missouri/Mississippi River basins with numerous stations above flood stage. Record stage for the Illinois River at Meredosia, IL was observed breaking the previous record set in 1943. USGS continues to make measurements of discharge through the holiday weekend to monitor flows at selected locations in support of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir operations. USGS National Flood Coordinator is participating in daily flood coordination calls with National Weather Service (NWS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Tennessee Valley Authority concerning flooding on the main stems of the lower Ohio, central and lower Mississippi, and Arkansas Rivers. Current Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (QPF) projects another 3 to 6 inches of rain over these basins in the next 5-7 days. NWS reports the current weather pattern will likely remain in place through end of July. A number of USACE reservoirs are nearing capacity. With the additional rain expected, a delicate operational balance is taking place with TVA and USACE reservoir operations as they try to empty as much water from the reservoirs (in anticipation of this future rain) without exacerbating flooding downstream. Current forecasts for the main stem Mississippi show cresting at 48ft at Cairo, IL on July 5, 43.5 at Vicksburg,MS on July 16, 36.5 at Baton Rouge, LA on July 18, and 14.5 at New Orleans, LA on July 19.
