PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IA) Iowa Streams Continue to Rise From Heavy Rains

Summary: USGS Iowa WSC crews continue to measure high streamflows at several streamgages in the state.

Flooding is occurring in Iowa and is considered moderate to major. The areas with the most significant flooding are in Central Iowa in the Raccoon and Des Moines River Basins. The USGS Iowa Office has dispatched 6 field staff to support high water data collection. In addition, 2 office staff are supporting the flood response. Numerous contacts have been made with the National Weather Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These contacts were primarily to give streamgage status updates and discharge measurement results. 27 additional streamflow measurements have been made in the effected areas. One streamgage has exceeded previous period of record highs. Preliminary flood frequency estimates indicate one streamgages had Annual Exceedance Probabilities (AEP) less than 1%.
