Summary: USGS crews continue response for moderate to major category flooding occurring in northern IN.
Significant flooding continues for a fourth day in the northern part of the state. Portions of the Kankakee, Iroquois, Tippecanoe, and St. Marys rivers are still above major category flood stage. The northern half of the state was spared any significant additional rain overnight but bands of rain have been falling over southern and central Indiana overnight and continue today. Smaller creeks and rivers are rising in these areas but the overall forecast does not show significant flooding at this time.
The Indiana-Kentucky WSC Indianapolis office has sent out 6 crews (11 people) to make discharge measurements throughout the day. Thirty six discharge measurements have been made over the past 4 days with several more planned. All gages are working properly at this time with the exception of two. Crews are working to repair one today, the other is inaccessible until flood waters recede. With the potential for additional rainfall over the weekend from Tropical Storm Bill, the Indianapolis office will continue to monitor conditions and have crews on standby should they be needed.
Contact with the NWS Ohio River Forecast Center and the NWS North Central River Forecast Center to coordinate discharge measurements at affected forecast points continues. Coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Homeland Security, and impacted local communities is ongoing as needed too.
