PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IN) Moderate to major category flooding ongoing in northern Indiana.

Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2015 11:01:09 EDT

Summary: Moderate to Major category flooding occurring in northern IN.

Significant flooding continues in the northern third of the state after only minor additional rainfall overnight. Portions of the Kankakee and Iroquois rivers are currently above major category flood stage with one gage on the Iroquois forecast to exceed the period of record early tomorrow morning. In the northeast portion of the state, the St. Marys River is almost at major category flood stage and will potentially reach it during the peak later this evening. Moisture from Tropical Storm Bill is expected to arrive over the central and southern portion of the state later this week.

Across the northern part of the state there have been multiple road closures including large population centers like Ft. Wayne due to inundation from rivers and ditches. Several neighborhoods have also required sandbagging. There were also 25 people rescued in the town of Buffalo which is bisected by the Tippecanoe River. No injuries were reported but roads in the town are completely inaccessible according to news reports.

The Indiana-Kentucky WSC Indianapolis office has sent out 5 crews (9 people) to make discharge measurements throughout the day. Ten discharge measurements were made yesterday along with 6 gage inspections. Two gages had malfunctions yesterday but were repaired. All others are working properly at this time with the exception of one in the NW portion of the state. The Indianapolis office continues to be in contact with the NWS Ohio River Forecast Center and the NWS North Central River Forecast Center to coordinate discharge measurements at affected forecast points. Coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and impacted local communities continues as well.
