Summary: Heavy bands of rain over the past 24 hours across the northern third of the state have resulted in moderate flooding within the affected area with the potential for major category flooding in several locations over the next 24-48 hours.
Minor to moderate flooding is occurring across the northern third of Indiana after heavy rains crossed the area. According to initial National Weather Service (NWS) maps, some areas experienced between 4 and 5 inches of rain over the past 24 hours. NWS river forecasts are currently predicting major category floods on portions of the Kankakee, Iroquois, Eel, and St. Marys Rivers within the next 12 hours.
The Indiana-Kentucky WSC Indianapolis office has sent out 3 crews (5 people) to make discharge measurements throughout the day. All gages are working properly at this time. More measurements will likely be made tomorrow as another wave of rain is expected over the central portion of the state. The Indianapolis office has been in contact with the NWS Ohio River Forecast Center and the NWS North Central River Forecast Center to coordinate discharge measurements at forecast points. Coordination with the NWS and affected local communities will be ongoing throughout the week.
