PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NE) Nebraska WSC Flood Response for June 4-5

Date: Fri, 05 Jun 2015 13:11:15 EDT

Summary: Heavy precipitation between June 3-5 has caused minor to major flooding in five river basins in southeast Nebraska.

Southeast Nebraska has acquired 3-5 inches of rain, with pockets up to 7 inches over the past two days causing river levels to go above NWS flood stage at seven streamgages in five river basins. The basins include the Little Blue, Big Blue, Salt Creek, Little Nemaha, and Big Nemaha. During the past 30 days, this same region has seen about 8-20 inches of rain. Yesterday and today, three crews (six personnel) were deployed to measure the flooding in southeast Nebraska, and one crew (two personnel) will be deployed on Saturday. Two streamgage pressure lines were torn out by massive amounts of debris in the Big Nemaha River, and have been temporarily repaired. The Big Nemaha River at Falls City streamgage (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ne/nwis/uv/?site_no=06815000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060) added another Columbus sounding weight and Price meter to its debris pile (that would be about the fifth set in the past 15 years). No ratings extensions or indirect measurements of discharge were needed for this latest event.

In western Nebraska, high flows (above flood stage) have persisted throughout the past 23 days on the South Platte River and the upper Platte River in Nebraska, with expected higher flows when the Colorado mountain snowpack melt reaches the system. One crew (two personnel) continues to monitor the high flows in the South Platte and upper Platte Basins.

Information has been communicated via phone, emails, and NWS Chat to the USACE, NWS, Nebraska Emergency Response, and the Nebraska Natural Resources Districts.
