Summary: An intense storm system moved through the state overnight creating widespread flash flooding, especially in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
A storm system moved across the state overnight, generating 1-2 inches of rainfall in short periods from the NW panhandle through central Texas and on to the coastal areas. The area hardest hit was North Central Texas and the Dallas - Fort Worth area where the storm system stalled instead of moving quickly as it did in most of the state. This area received 4-8 inches of rain and experienced significant and widespread flash flooding. The Texas DPS reported more than 100 water rescues during the night and into the early morning.
USGS crews from all the Texas WSC offices are out responding to the ongoing floods that were creating crests in the lower basins of all the major river basins in the State (except for the Rio Grande) and, now, the new flooding created by the storms last night. More than 430 flow measurements have been conducted since the first of the month in response to flooding.
The TX WSC continues to interact with the NWS, the USACE, personnel in the State Operation Center for this flood, and our cooperators to ensure we know about the most critical, evolving issues. Our field teams have been interviewed numerous times by local media and the WSC Director was interviewed on The Weather Channel this morning.
