PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (TX) Flooding in Central and East Texas

Date: Tue, 26 May 2015 13:28:17 EDT

Summary: Significant rainfall occurred in Central and East Texas yesterday, which led to significant flooding, specifically in Austin, Waco, and Houston areas.

Event Information: Another round of storms came into the state from the Rio Grande valley, intensified over Central Texas on Memorial Day afternoon, and moved eastward as a large system through Texas during the evening. The rainfall on saturated grounds caused flash flooding in parts of central Texas, including the greater Austin and Waco areas, as well as contributed to sustained high and flood stage flows. The Houston area is now responding to flooding conditions.

Monday, May 25th, TXWSC personnel responded to intensive flooding that occurred on May 23-24. More than 10 teams successfully repaired 7 gages, rebuilt 1 gage, flagged high water marks at 2 sites, and completed 9 high flow measurements. Additional staff and volunteers were activated to respond to flooding as new storms moved through Austin and Houston areas.

Today TXWSC has more than 10 teams focused on repairs, measuring flood level flows, and flagging high water marks in the San Antonio, Guadalupe, Colorado, Brazos, and Trinity river basins.

Personnel in the WSC have been coordinating with the State Operation Center which includes FEMA and the NWS. We have been in touch with cooperators about concerns and keeping them informed of our activities.
