Summary: Significant rainfall in Central Texas led to record level flooding in the Blanco River and flash flooding in many basins.
An intense band of storms set up over Central Texas yesterday and continued overnight. The rainfall caused widespread flash flooding as well as sustained flows in flood stage. The most significant precipitation occurred near the City of Blanco, Texas in the Blanco River where approximately 12 inches fell over several hours. Evacuations were executed in the cities of Wimberly and San Marcos overnight as the flood waters moved downstream. Flow in the Blanco River exceeded flows of record before three of the gages stopped transmitting and are assumed to have been submerged or washed away. Crews are currently working to assess the situation. Flooding continued in North Central Texas in the Wichita Falls area, but the severity did not increase overnight. The rainfall is anticipated to be located more east today, but the potential for additional rainfall in Central Texas increases again tomorrow. The Texas Water Science Center currently has 10 teams out doing repairs and measuring flood level flows.
Personnel in the WSC have been coordinating with the State Operation Center which includes FEMA and the NWS. We have been in touch with cooperators about concerns and keeping them informed of our activities.
