PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (OK) Moderate Flooding in Oklahoma

Date: Wed, 20 May 2015 13:49:19 EDT

Summary: Moderate flooding along the Red River basin, with major flooding predicted.

Moderate to some predicted major flooding is occurring or will occur in Southern Oklahoma. The areas with the most significant flooding are the tributary and main stem of the Red River. Rainfall totals from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning have been 2-6 inches in Southern Oklahoma, falling on already saturated soils and high rivers. Oklahoma has already exceeded the historic record total for precipitation in the month of May for parts of the state. The Oklahoma Office has dispatched 6 field crews consisting of 12 individuals. In addition, 5 office staff are supporting the flood response. Numerous contacts have been made with local cooperators as well as federal cooperators, National Weather Service (NWS), River Forecast Center (ABRFC), and the Corps of Engineers (USACE). These contacts were primarily to give flow measurements at streamgage locations and coordination of flow releases at reservoirs. Many of the stations in Southern Oklahoma in the Red River drainage basin have flows that have been at or near the highest in the last 15-10 years. No peaks of record have occurred though. No indirect measurements have been needed as of yet.
