PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (SD) Western SD Flooding

Date: Mon, 18 May 2015 09:38:08 EDT

Summary: Major flooding in the White River basin, minor flooding throughout western SD

Flooding is occurring in the White River Basin with 3 sites currently above flood stage. Minor flooding is also occurring across western SD as well as the upper James River basin.

Heavy wet snow fell on May 10 with up to 16 inches in some locations. Rainfall throughout the area since the 10th has slowly increased flows to flood levels with more rainfall predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

The White River at the NE/SD state line (06445685) has a new peak of record at over 4,000 cfs. This site will require an indirect to determine the exact peak as the site cannot be measured above 1,100 cfs.

No gages damaged or destroyed.

Ten staff are responding to the hydrologic events across the state. Measurements on the White River will be used to extend ratings or verify gaps. Three White River gages went off the rating during the past few days. High water mark flagging at the White River at the NE/SD State line will take place later in the week when flows decline sufficiently to allow for a measurement near 1,000 cfs is cableway is still operable.

One measurement on the Cheyenne River below Angostura Dam is at the request of the Bureau of Reclamation.
