PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NE) Flooding in Nebraska

Date: Fri, 08 May 2015 13:52:39 EDT

Summary: Moderate to major flooding in Southeast nebraska

Most gaging stations located in both the rural and urban areas in southeast Nebraska are receding from the peak that occurred yesterday A number of gaging stations recorded, or were near a peak of record.

The Little Blue River near Fairbury (06884000) recorded the highest water level in 90 years of operation. The recorded flow at this station was second highest in the period of record. The USGS gaging stations in operation around the city of Lincoln recorded the highest peak flows and stage recorded in over 20 years.

Three field crews, comprising 6 staff, will continue to work today, making flow measurements during the recession in the affected area. One crew comprising two staff will be collecting additional flow information on Saturday, May 9. To date, despite flooded roads and the difficulty in getting to sites, 15 flow measurements have been made in the affected area.

Despite record or near record flows all gaging stations in the Nebraska Water Science Center gaging network operated throughout this event.

Communications are ongoing through NWS chat and phone calls with the NWS, the Army Corps of Engineers, cooperators and other stakeholders.
