PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MA) Nor'easter of January 2015

Summary: Massachusetts office deploys storm surge sensors in preparation for the Nor'easter of January 2015.

In preparation for the Nor'easter of January 2015, the two teams of hydrographers from the Massachusetts office deployed seven storm surge sensors along the coast in the following towns:

Scituate
Marshfield
Plymouth
Cohasset
Rockport
Ipswich
Plum Island

In addition to these seven storm surge sensors, there are four USGS tide gages reporting real time data. These are at:

Merrimack River at Newburyport
Popponesset at Mashpee
Sesuit Harbor at Dennis
Provincetown

The National Weather Service has forecasted major coastal flooding, especially for the late afternoon high tide cycle on Tuesday. The greatest impact is expected along the east and northeast facing shorelines.

Wind gusts along the coast at 55 to 65 miles per hour, and in excess of 75 miles per hour at the islands Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.

Snow accumulation expected between 24 to 36 inches in some parts with snow drifts between 3 to 5 feet.
