Summary: Heavy rains resulting from remnants of Hurricane Norbert causing heavy floods in Southern Nevada.
Precipitation totaling up to 4.5 inches in less than 8 hours is causing major flooding in southeastern Nevada. A 50-mile stretch of I-15 is closed northeast of Las Vegas due to floodwaters rushing over the highway with resultant damage, including a stretch of highway completely washed out. About 190 people from the Moapa Indian Reservation were provided shelter after tribal police warned of a potential dam breach. Flood peaks occurred over the night September 8-9 at all affected rivers and washes, including the Virgin River, Muddy River, Weiser Wash, and Las Vegas Wash with its tributary washes. Three field crews were deployed today to verify peak stages and flag high-water marks for indirect measurements. Field crews are expected to continue work for several days and increase after I-15 is reopened.
