PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NE) Flooding in Nebraska

Summary: Heavy rainfall over the past week resulting in flooding the lower Platte and Big Blue Basin in Nebraska.

Nebraska is experiencing flooding in the lower Platte River Basin on Wahoo Creek at Ithaca, Nebr. and in the Big Blue Basin on the West Fork of the Big Blue River near Dorchester, NE.

Heavy rain has been falling in the last 48 hours over much of Nebraska with initial reports of over 10 inches in some locations. Significant flooding is forecast in the Warren and Marion areas later today. Highways 92 and 77 were closed yesterday at Wahoo, Nebraska. A flash flood warning is in effect for Polk County. A stationary system of moderate to heavy rain is continuing in these watersheds.

The gages on Wahoo Creek at Ithaca, West Fork of the Big Blue River near Dorchester, and Big Blue River at Crete are above flood stage. The USGS has 3 crews (6 people) responding and will be making measurements throughout the day. All gages are working properly at this time within the impacted area. Communications are ongoing between the NE USGS and the National Weather Service to correspond discharge measurements with local forecasts.
