Summary: Major flooding in the Phoenix area Tuesday August 19.
All flooding occurred yesterday in response to the training of wave after wave of heavy thunderstorm activity in the northern portions of Maricopa County.
Flooding occurred on Skunk Creek, Cave Creek, New River, Agua Fria River, and Hassayampa River. Three USGS crews are out today to flag high water marks at streams that had large peaks. They are doing recessional measurements and are repairing gages that were damaged during the floods.
Flooding ended overnight with just some lower recessional measurements today. We have been asked by FCDMC to look into an indirect measurement on Skunk Creek below Carefree Highway and above the CAP Canal. Flow was backed up as Skunk Creek crossed the CAP Canal and these flood waters flowed out onto and flooded Interstate 17. Interstate 17 was closed for a portion of the day yesterday to allow cleanup of the roadway.
