PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Flooding on Long Island, NY

Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2014 12:36:24 EDT

Summary: Significant urban and small stream flooding is occurring in parts of Long Island, in response to record rainfall of over 13 inches.

Record rainfall of over 13 inches in some parts of Long Island has caused significant urban, roadway, and stream flooding. The hardest hit region stretches from southeastern Nassau and southwestern Suffolk Counties through central and north-central Suffolk County. These areas received between 6 to 13 inches of rainfall in about a 12-hour period. Areas surrounding this affected region have received much less rainfall.

Streams in the affected region quickly rose to above bankfull overnight with at least one stream reaching record levels. The USGS currently has crews out documenting and making field measurements, but due to significant roadway flooding are having trouble getting to some of the more heavily affected locations. Many of the streams are small and flashy and have already peaked and are beginning to decline.

Three field teams (7 technicians) have been dispatched today from the New York Water Science Center, Coram Program Office.
