Summary: Spotty heavy rain fell yesterday afternoon and evening in Southeastern Lower Michigan resulting in widespread flooding.
Widespread flooding has occurred overnight in Southeastern Lower Michigan. As much as 6 inches of rain fell in some areas of relatively small areal extent while neighboring basins received only 1 or 2 inches. Heaviest rainfall appears to have been south of Michigan State Highway M-59. Urban flooding, particularly in low parts of the highway system, stranded many motorists. Some basements also sustained damage.
Streamflow is receding rapidly today. Period of record high flows occurred at the Ecorse River at Dearborn Heights with 12 years of record and the Clinton River near Fraser, with 67 years of record. Red Run, which drains a large part of the heavily industrialized area north and east of Detroit was the area with heaviest rainfall. Red Run, which enters the Clinton River upstream of the gage at Fraser, is currently ungaged.
Field staff dispatched today is 6 technicians comprising 4 crews from the Lansing Field Office.
