Summary: USGS crews respond to record flooding in northwest Iowa.
Flooding is occurring in northwest Iowa as a result of heavy rains from June 14-16. Over 5 inches of rain fell in Lyon and Woodbury counties according to the National Weather Service (NWS) estimates. Peaks of record have been exceeded at two streamgages on the Rock River and one streamgage on Perry Creek. Currently, eight streamgages in Iowa are above the NWS flood stage.
USGS flood activities include field operations by 6 crews (two people in each crew) making discharge measurements, inspecting streamgages for damages, collecting water-quality samples, and possibly flagging high water marks. Two individuals remain in the office to assist in flood coordination, extend/change rating curves, and communicating information to partners. Measurements are being provided to the NWS and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Information is also being posted on Twitter and Facebook.
