Summary: Heavy rainfall over central and northern Virginia is increasing the chances moderate stream flooding in the area.
Precipitation totaling 2 to 3 inches (with an additional 2 to 4 inches forecast to fall during the remainder of the day and tonight) in central and northern Virginia is causing stream levels to rise across the area. The USGS has deployed crews to measure flood discharges and take stream water-quality samples across the affected area. A total of five discharge measurement crews totaling 10 personnel and four sampling crews totaling 8 personnel are working at this time. Current conditions include localized flooding in suburban and urban areas of northern Virginia and moderate flooding in basin in the central part of the State. Minor to moderate flooding is expected to continue in the James, Rappahannock and Potomac River Basins for the next couple of days. No instances of flood-related deaths or major property damage have been reported at this time.
