PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MI) Flooding in Michigan

Summary: Minor to Major flooding in central Lower Michigan may continue through Saturday April 19.

Minor to major flooding is continuing in the central part of the Lower Peninsula April 17. NWS still lists three gages with minor flooding, one gage with moderate flooding (Muskegon River at Croton), and one gage (Muskegon River at Evart) with major flooding. NWS currently projects that the Muskegon River at Evart is not currently expected to begin receding until Saturday morning.

No injuries or deaths have been associated with the flooding. Over 200 homes in a couple of areas were evacuated. Most flooded areas are sparsely populated. At least four streamgages have peaks above period of record in the following watersheds; Muskegon, Manistee, Boardman, and Tobacco.

No streamgages have been damaged to date.

Today, USGS has deployed 4 hydrologic technicians comprising 2 crews to make boat measurements. By tonight, crews from the Grayling and Lansing Field Offices will have made 33 measurements at 28 sites. Repeat measurements during the recessionary started yesterday afternoon and will continue through today, and possibly tomorrow.
