Summary: Minor to major flooding continued at some streams in central Lower Michigan on April 16th.
Minor to major flooding is continuing in the central part of the Lower Peninsula April 16. Wintry weather and fresh snow from yesterday is expected to disappear today as temperatures warm to mid-40's in most places. This morning, NWS still lists four gages with minor flooding, four gages with moderate flooding, and one gage (Muskegon River at Evart) with major flooding. Length of the flood peak on the Muskegon River is expected to be prolonged a bit due to the collapse of a dam on a tributary yesterday. Several sites are expected to reach, or have already reached, 1% to 0.5% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) peaks. As of today only the Muskegon River and Pere Marquette Rivers have not peaked; both are expected to peak tomorrow morning.
No injuries or deaths have been associated with the flooding. Over 200 homes in a couple of areas have been evacuated and some roads are still closed. Most flooded areas are sparsely populated. At least four streamgages have peaks above period of record in the following watersheds; Muskegon, Manistee, Boardman, and Tobacco.
No streamgages have been damaged to date.
USGS has deployed 5 hydrologic technicians comprising 3 crews to make measurements April 16.
