PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NE) Nebraska Lodgepole Creek flood response

Date: Thu, 06 Mar 2014 16:56:31 EST

Summary: USGS NEWSC Low-land Flooding Response for Lodgepole Creek at Bushnell, Nebr.

Event Information:
One USGS field crew has been monitoring low-land flooding in the Lodgepole Creek Basin in west-central Nebraska since March 5, 2014. The USGS streamgage at Lodgepole Creek at Bushnell, Nebr. (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ne/nwis/uv/?site_no=06762500&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060) is experiencing the 12th highest streamflow and gage height in its 72 years of record (since 1932). The higher flows are the result of rapid snow melt, and are causing low-land flooding across the Basin. Excessive runoff from this snow melt has caused minor flooding in small streams contributing to the Lodgepole Creek, and has caused some flow over highways and underpasses.

This is the highest flow recorded at this streamgage (which commonly measures zero annual flow in the last several years) since 1981. Lodgepole Creek is a tributary to the South Platte River.
