PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IN) Continued flooding across Indiana

Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2013 13:01:59 EST

Summary: Minor to moderate flooding continues across southern Indiana.

Widespread flooding across Indiana continues for a fourth day. The southern half of the state remains the hardest hit with flood levels cresting today in the major category along the East Fork White near Seymour. Forecasts remain consistent, predicting moderate flooding along both the East and West forks of the White as the crest moves downstream throughout the week.

Many roads are closed or have limited access in the southeast and central portions of the state. Local rescue teams continue to help stranded homeowners and careless drivers whose cars were overwhelmed on impassable roads. 76 streamgages reached flood stage at some point over the past 4 days across the state. 35 remain at or above flood stage currently. At least 3 gages reached their peak of record during this event.

The IN office had 2 crews (4 people) and 1 office support person responding to the flood today. Crews are repairing a gage that went down yesterday and also made one discharge measurement. One gage is currently lagging due to lack of connectivity to the stream but is in an area where the crest already passed. All other gages are working properly at this time. Communication between USGS and the NWS continues along with several local cooperators regarding gage specific inquiries. The IN office will not have any crews out during the Christmas holiday tomorrow.
