PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (GA) USGS crews respond to flooding in North Georgia

Summary: USGS crews are responding to flooding caused by prolonged rainfall in the north Georgia region.

Rivers in the North Georgia mountains are extremely high due to prolonged rains from tropical moisture over the Southeast United States. Currently the Atlanta metropolitan area is under a flash flood warning until 7pm tonight due to a band of storms that is continuously "training" over the same areas of saturated soils and high rivers.

USGS crews earlier today performed flood measurements on the Etowah river that was eight feet higher than any previous measurement at that location. Additional crews are being deployed to verify rating accuracy at various locations in response to this ongoing rain event.
