flooding from record rainfalls (July 1, 2013).
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch which
remains in effect for all of Central North Carolina through
Tuesday, July 2. Reports indicate a new record rainfall amount of
5.12 inches fell in Chapel Hill on Sunday, June 30 breaking the
all-time one-day record.
In addition to flash flooding concerns, the National Weather Service
Southeast River Forecast Center has reported that minor flooding is
occurring or expected at locations in the Neuse, Cape Fear and
Lumber River Basins (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/serfc/ ).
Seven USGS crews (a total of 16 staff members) from the Raleigh,
Charlotte and Asheville Offices of the North Carolina Water
Science Center are in the field today. These crews are making
discharge measurements, verifying peak gage heights, ensuring gages
are operational and flagging high water marks for indirect
discharge measurements.
