USGS Crews from the North Carolina Water Science Center respond to 
flooding from record rainfalls (July 1, 2013).
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch which 
remains in effect for all of Central North Carolina through 
Tuesday, July 2.  Reports indicate a new record rainfall amount of 
5.12 inches fell in Chapel Hill on Sunday, June 30 breaking the 
all-time one-day record. 
In addition to flash flooding concerns, the National Weather Service 
Southeast River Forecast Center has reported that minor flooding is 
occurring or expected at locations in the Neuse, Cape Fear and 
Lumber River Basins (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/serfc/ ). 
Seven USGS crews (a total of 16 staff members) from the Raleigh, 
Charlotte and Asheville Offices of the North Carolina Water 
Science Center are in the field today.  These crews are making 
discharge measurements, verifying peak gage heights, ensuring gages 
are operational and flagging high water marks for indirect 
discharge measurements.
