PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (NY) Record flooding - West Canada Creek in central New york

Summary: Major flooding: central New York

Record, major flooding and flash flooding is occurring in central
New York as a result of 5-6 inches of rainfall in a few hours.
Numerous water rescues, evacuations, and road closures have occurred
within the affected areas. Three USGS streamgages exceeded NWS Flood
Stage: one gage located in the West Canada Creek basin and two
additional USGS gages located in the Mohawk River basin. In addition,
the West Canada Creek at Kast Bridge gage (1920-current) set a new,
provisional peak discharge record (25,000 cfs) that was recently set
in April 2011. Approximate AEP is less than 0.01 (>100-yr flood).

Three USGS crews (6 staff members) from the Troy, NY Data Section of
the New York Water Science Center are making discharge measurements
today to document conditions and verify and update stage-discharge
relationships at USGS streamgages.
