PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IA) Heavy Rains in Northeast Iowa

Summary: USGS crew from the Iowa Water Science Center responds to flooding in Northeast Iowa – June 23, 2013

Flood warnings and flash flood watches are in effect for Northeast Iowa. 4-6 inches of rain have fallen in the last 24 hours in Northeast Iowa with the heaviest rains falling in the most northeast Iowa counties of Allamakee and Winneshiek (http://water.weather.gov/precip/). The Upper Iowa (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ia/nwis/uv?site_no=05388250) and Yellow River (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ia/nwis/uv?site_no=05389000) basins are showing the largest rises as they approach peak of record levels. The Yellow River State Forest campground was evacuated as creeks rose (http://www.kwwl.com/story/22662722/2013/06/22/campers-evacuated-from-state).

One crew of two people has been deployed today to make streamflow measurements and ensure streamgages are functioning properly. Communication will be made with the National Weather Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding flood information.
