USGS Crews from the North Carolina Water Science Center continue
to respond to flooding from Tropical Storm Andrea (June 8, 2013).

Tropical Storm Andrea brought flash flooding, power outages and
record rainfall to North Carolina. A new daily record rainfall
total of 5.14 inches for June 7 was reported at the National
Weather Service station at the Raleigh-Durham International
Airport in North Carolina.

The National Weather Service Southeast River Forecast Center has
reported that minor and moderate flooding is occurring or expected
at locations in the Tar, Neuse and Cape Fear River Basins
(http://www.srh.noaa.gov/serfc/ ). The USGS Streamgage on Crabtree
Creek at Highway 70 near Crabtree Valley Mall peaked at 19.52 feet
last night more than 1.5 feet above flood stage

after reporting more than 3.7 inches of rain for the event with
nearly 1.5 inches occurring in 1 hour.

Five USGS crews (a total of 9 staff members) from the Raleigh
Office of the North Carolina Water Science Center are continuing
hydrologic data collection activities today. These crews are
collecting water quality samples and making discharge measurements
to document the conditions and verify and update stage-discharge
relationships at USGS streamgaging stations. The USGS continues
to work closely with partners including the National Weather Service
and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that critical data
needs are being met.
