PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (IA) Heavy Rains and Flooding in Iowa

Summary: Heavy rains across Iowa with anectodotal rain fall totals of 6-8" in Central Iowa through Sunday May 26, 2013

Many gages in Iowa are near or above flood stage after heavy rains across the state this Memorial day week-end and crews have kept crews from the Iowa Water Science Center busy this week-end. A crew from the Eastern Field Unit in Iowa City repaired the gage at the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids on Saturday May 25th. This highly watched site was almost 2 feet above flood stage; after the repair the crew then measured descharge. A crew from the Western Field Unit in Council Bluffs measured high flow at 4 sites (CSG) in Northwest Iowa on Sundy May 26. Today (May 27) 2 field crews from the Eastern Field Unit in Iowa City are measuring 3 to 4 sites in the hardest hit area in Marshall and Tama County. The Iowa River at Marshalltown will be just under the peak of record.

Power outages are reported in the western side of the state, numerours road closings are reported in Central Iowa and NWS Flash Flood (Sunday evening) and Flood warnings are active around the state. NWS AHPS percent of normal precip for the past 7 days shows the entire state from 125 to 600% of normal. http://water.weather.gov/precip/
