PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (GA) USGS crews from Georgia respond to high water from weekend rains

Summary: USGS crews from the Georgia Water Science Center respond to high water in north Georgia caused by record daily rainfalls from this past weekend.

Moderate flooding is occurring at locations across northern Georgia due to record daily rainfall totals for May 4-5. Rainfall totals from 3.5 to over 5 inches of rain during this timeframe caused many streams to exceed the NWS flood stage over the weekend. Today, while the smaller streams have crested, the larger rivers remained high enough to require flood measurements and water-quality sampling around the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Four crews from the USGS Georgia Water Science Center have responded today to measure flood waters and repair a downed streamgage. Additional rainfall is forecast for today, and an assessment of measurement needs will be made early tomorrow again.
