PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (MI) Flooding in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan

Summary: Potential widespread flooding in Michigan

An area of precipitation stretching from the Gulf of Mexico up through the Midwest has resulted in 1 to 5 inches of rain falling over much of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan since mid-day Wednesday.

Stages at many streams are nearing flood stage again after skirting it, or exceeding it, last week. NWS has predicted considerable rain across the same area today, although the exact storm path is still unknown as of the time of this Alert message.

No gages have been damaged yet, although the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) streamgage/water-quality sampling station at the Grand River near Eastmanville (station 04119400) is close to inundation. Some equipment was removed from the site to prevent damage on April 16.

All available field staff from Lansing Field Office were dispatched this morning, primarily to pick up measurements at smaller basins that runoff quickly, and set up for some urban peaks in the Ann Arbor area tomorrow morning. Ohio WSC has crews on standby should the thunderstorms today result in additional, or protracted, flooding.
