PROJECT ALERT NOTICE () Flooding in Louisiana

Summary: Continued flooding and activites resulting from Hurricane Isaac

Flood waters are cresting or continue to reced within the southeasten Florida parishes and within Lake Pontchartrain. Some gages, like Little Irish Bayou at Hwy 11 (300830089515000) are recording the impounded waters within the Bayou Sauvage Wildlife Refuge north of New Orleans. Therfore, this gage has a flatter slower recession hydrograph.

Two crew of four continue to make discharge measurments today. Crews will continue to measure the Bogue Chitto, Tchefuncte, Tangipahoa, Tickfaw, Natabany, and Amite Rivers. Sites along these rivers will be measured multiple times to verify the rating at various stage and discharge conditions. The Tangipahoa River at Robert is cresting today and will be measure; this site was measured yesterday (8/13/2012). The stage is presently 23.73 @ 9:30am; the POR peak measurement was made during 1983 flood at 24.19 feet.

At this time, a crew of 8 personnel (Team Isacc) are meeting in the Baton Rouge auditorium. This crew consists of 6 LAWSC and 2 NWRC employees. They are reviewing the SOP for running RTK levels, coordinating and review the HWM and storm surge sensor recovery SOP. They will move out to New Orleans later today. Public Affairs Specialist, Alex Demas, from the Office of Communnication is in Baton Rouge to interface and arrange meetings with the media.

Flood crests within the Florida Parish close to the POR, but probably not exceed the period of record (POR). Attached are Flood Tracking Charts for the Amite Basin and Ascension Parish gages. At many sites within the lower locations of these Basin, the flood peaks from Hurricane Isaac is within the top 5 POR peaks.
