PROJECT ALERT NOTICE (LA MS) Potential dam failure - Lake Tangipahoa

Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2012 15:09:38 EDT

Summary: Potentail dam failure could impact MS and LA communities

The dam for lake Tangipahoa at Percy Qinn State Park in SW Mississippi is in danger of failing due to excessive runoff from Hurrican Isaac rainfall. Repairs to the dam are ongoing while the lake level continues to rise. Local emergency officials are considering an intentional breach of the dam to lessen the chance of a major failure. USGS crews from the Mississippi Water Science Center is sending field crews to deploy storm surge sensors at a series of bridges south of the lake to record the event should the dam actually fail. Monitoring sites on the Tangipahoa River are operated by the MS and LA Water Science Centers and can be viewed on USGS NWIS real-time monitoring site.
