Subject: Selection of Deputy Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Operations
The Office of the Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Operations (ACH/O) is
pleased to announce that Stephen E. Hammond will be joining the staff as
the Deputy Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Operations. Steve received a
Bachelors degree in Mathematics/Geology from Whitman College in 1979. He
joined the U.S. Geological Survey, Geologic Division, in Lakewood,
Colorado, in 1975 as a student through the Minority Participation in
Earth Sciences (MPES) program. In 1977, he joined the Water Resources
Division in the Colorado District. As a Hydrologic Technician, he worked
on oil shale and groundwater-quality studies in the coal hydrology
program. Later, Steve joined the Cascades Volcano Observatory as a
Hydrologist where he conducted fluvial and bedload sediment transport
studies, and monitored water-resources hazards associated with Mount St.
Helens. From 1990 to 1993, Steve served on a quality management task
group that helped to design the new National Water Information System.
>From 1994 to the present, Steve has served as Hydrologic Data Chief and
Assistant District Chief for the Nevada District. He brings to Reston a
wealth of technical and managerial knowledge and experience. Please join
me in welcoming Steve to the Office of the ACH/O. He is scheduled to
report in mid-March 1999.
