WATER RESOURCES DIVISION MEMORANDUM NO. 98.24

Subject: PUBLICATIONS--Guidelines for Submitting Abstracts of Published
Reports into the Water Resources Division Reports Tracking System

This memorandum supersedes guidelines regarding the preparation and
submittal of abstracts of published U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports
to the Office of Information (OI), Reston, Virginia, as first announced in
Water Resources Division (WRD) Memorandum No. 95.41. Effective
immediately, please discontinue sending (by mail or electronic means) the
abstracts of published reports to Cassandra Blackwell, Branch of Regional
Research, Eastern Region; Wayne Green (retired); or Lorna Kendrix, OI.
Before a report is distributed to the public, the report abstract and
associated information should be entered in the Report Citation Screen of
the WRD Report Tracking System (RTS).

In the near future, the RTS will be used, among other things, to generate
entries automatically into the online monthly bulletin, New Publications
of the USGS, including the "For Immediate Release" WRD web page. The
online monthly bulletin will be used to generate and print the paper
version of the bulletin (quarterly and annually), which is, at present, the
only official mechanism (other than a news release) for announcing the
availability of new USGS products. The RTS will also be used to generate
entries automatically into the WRD Selected Water Resources Abstracts
(SWRA) system. Because of these plans, it is mandatory that all abstracts
from newly published USGS reports be entered into the RTS.

Please visit the RTS help pages that cover "Report Citation" to find
information on entering the abstract and associated bibliographic
information into the RTS. The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the
Report Citation Screen is as follows:

                http://txwww.cr.usgs.gov/rts/help/citation.html

Abstracts in the new searchable SWRA web applications page can be accessed
at URL:

                        /public/swra/

The monthly bulletin, New Publications of the USGS, can be accessed at URL:

                        http://pubs.usgs.gov/publications/

If you have any questions regarding the entry of published abstracts into
the RTS, please submit your inquiries to the RTS help email address:
rts_help@usgs.gov.
