Subject: Water Resources Division Hydrologic Analysis and Modeling
         Software Applications

This memorandum announces the distribution of the current suite of
hydrologic analysis and modeling software for use on Data General computers
and the establishment of on-line repositories for this software.  The third
Water Resources Division hydrologic analysis and modeling software
applications (WRDAPPs) tape has been mailed to all WRD Data General site
administrators.  This tape contains 60 WRDAPPs consisting of 177 programs
and libraries for use on Data General workstations and servers.  WRDAPPs
include software for hydrologic process modeling, statistics, graphics, data
management, and user interface development.  In general, each WRDAPP on the
tape consists of (1) the compiled software for the Data General; 2) scripts
to run the program(s) when required; (3) test data set(s); (4) scripts to
run tests for verification of the program(s); (5) a README file and on-line
documentation, if available; and (6) UNIX "man"ual page(s).  This software
is a replacement, not an update, of the WRDAPPs distributed on WRDAPP tape 2
(distributed June 1994).

The Hydrologic Analysis Software Support (HASS) Team prepared the tape.  The
HASS Team is responsible for gathering WRDAPPs to (1) package official
versions in a consistent manner; (2) provide easy access; and (3) provide
informational and operational support to end users.  The Discipline Offices
are responsible for the review and approval of the technical adequacy of the
WRDAPPs.

HASS has established two central, on-line repositories for the WRDAPPs:
public and internal.  WRDAPPs in the public repository are documented by
report(s) that have received Director's approval.  WRDAPPs in the internal
repository include: (1) preliminary versions of WRDAPPs in the review
process; (2) informally documented programs and scripts related to
USGS-specific applications; (3) proprietary software that have agreements
restricting distribution; and (4) public-domain software compiled for USGS
use.

The internal repository is accessible via the World Wide Web (WWW) at URL
http://hassrvares.er.usgs.gov/ or via anonymous FTP from
hassrvares.er.usgs.gov (130.11.51.203) in the /pub/software directory.
Access to the internal software repository is restricted to computers
registered on the USGS network.  The public repository is accessible on the
WWW from the USGS Water Resources Information web page at URL
/.  The URL for the public repository is:
/software/.  The public anonymous FTP site is on the
Water Resources Information server (water.usgs.gov/ or 130.11.50.175) in the
/pub/software directory.  Note that the internal WWW page provides access to
public software as well as internal-use-only software.  However, for
anonymous FTP users, public software is available only from the public
anonymous FTP site.

Each WRDAPP has its own WWW page where descriptive information and direct
retrieval of the software is possible.  Each software distribution package
(SDP) consists of the source or compiled code, documentation, and test data
sets.  Initially, compiled code is available for use on Data General
workstations.  Gradually, SDPs for other computer platforms will be
available through these repositories.

New releases of WRDAPPs will be posted on the WWW pages and announced in the
USGS modeling news group and via an electronic message sent to Data General
site administrators.  USGS personnel should use the WRDAPPs installed on
their local file servers to ensure that the same version is in use across
the USGS.  The site administrators are responsible for updating the WRDAPPs
from tape 3 as updates are made available (at most every 3 months).
Users requiring source code or versions compiled for other platforms should
retrieve them from the internal repository.

To ensure that the supported, official version of a WRDAPP is distributed to
the public, individuals shall not distribute any version of a WRDAPP except
the version in the public repository.  Developmental versions of a WRDAPP
are maintained by the authors or designated support person(s).  These
developmental versions can be distributed to the public by the authors for
review and testing purposes only and when cooperative agreements exist that
specify distribution is for these purposes.  When distributing unofficial
versions of software internally or for review and testing via WWW pages or
anonymous FTP, be sure that public access is restricted.

WRDAPPs are installed in the directory /usr/opt/wrdapp.  Each software
package has its own subdirectory, for example, MODFLOW is found in
/usr/opt/wrdapp/modflow2.5.  The following is a list of the software

included.  Note, applications marked with "**" are for internal-use-only,
that is, a preliminary version without Director's approval, proprietary
software, or public-domain software compiled for USGS use.
