WATER RESOURCES DIVISION MEMORANDUM NO. 96.20

Subject: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1133, "Contaminants in
the Mississippi River, 1987-92," edited by Robert H. Meade

It is with great pleasure that I announce to you the availability of the
subject report. It is the culmination of a decade of effort by a team of
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists to conduct a comprehensive
assessment of our Nation's most important river. I want to acknowledge the
scientific leadership shown by Bob Meade in making this study happen and in
bringing the highlights of it together in this summary report. This report
and the many data and research reports that support it will be valued
reference works by hydrologists and water-quality managers for decades to
come.

I also want to thank the many scientists who worked on the study and the
report. They put a lot of time and effort into producing this exceptional
data set. And, I commend them for taking the effort to communicate their
results through this USGS Circular and many USGS data reports. Publication
of these reports in addition to their journal articles will allow us to
reach a much wider audience.

The Colorado District Reports Unit also should be acknowledged for the
excellent graphical presentation of this report.

The USGS home page (http://www.usgs.gov) provides access to the news
release for this publication (entitled, "First Detailed Report Card on
Mississippi River Shows Movement of Contaminants"). Copies of the report
are available from the USGS, Branch of Information Services, Box 25286,
Denver, Colorado 80225.
