National Coordination of Bridge-Scour Studies In Reply Refer To: February 7, 1995 Mail Stop 415 OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 95.04 Subject: National Coordination of Bridge-Scour Studies The purpose of this memorandum is to announce that Gene W. Parker of the Massachusetts-Rhode Island District will serve as national coordinator of the Level I (scour-potential assessment) and Level II (bridge-scour evaluation) studies for the Office of Surface Water (OSW). Although still having responsibilities in his district, Gene will devote a significant portion of his time to the coordination. His primary goals include organizing and holding a training session for personnel of Level I and II studies, establishing an electronic-mail link with study leaders nationwide, providing information on Federal Highway Administration courses, and holding a workshop for project personnel. U.S. Geological Survey personnel involved in bridge-scour projects met in a concurrent session of three informal workgroups on assessment, evaluation, and processes that as held in conjunction with the 1994 American Society of Civil Engineers conference in San Francisco. Gene may decide to call meetings of the committees on assessment and evaluation to consider issues related to quality assurance and weights of assessment parameters. David S. Mueller of the Kentucky District continues to fill the role of overall coordinator of bridge-scour and related studies for the OSW. Dave is the project chief on several national studies funded by the Federal Highway Administration through the OSW and is the point of contact for coordination and technical support for data collection, research, monitoring, and modeling projects associated with bridge scour.
