PUBLICATIONS--Reports on cost-effectiveness of District stream-gaging programs In Reply Refer To: March 26, 1984 EGS-Mail Stop 415 SURFACE WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 84.09 Subject: PUBLICATIONS--Reports on cost-effectiveness of District stream- gaging programs The Open-File Report 83-261 "Cost-Effectiveness of the Stream-Gaging program in Maine" has been recommended as a prototype for use by Districts in reporting the results of their cost-effectiveness studies. However, subse- quent to its publication, it has been called to the Surface Water Branch's attention that the publication policies of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) strongly dictate against the use of the word recommend or any of its variations. Therefore, the Water-Supply Paper that is based on Open-File Report 83-261 has been revised to avoid the use of recommendations. Galley proofs of the Water-Supply Paper are being expedited by the Office of Scientific Publications and Data Management and copies will be made available to serve as a new prototype for subsequent reports. Because the Water-Supply Paper will conform to USGS policies, it should be used in subsequent reports as a reference instead of the Open-File Report. The Water-Supply Paper should be referenced as being in press until it is available to the public. Also, there is attached a revised version of the section of the prototype "Description of Uncertainty Functions." This revised version clarifies some of the wording of the section of the same title given in Open-File Report 83-261. Please take advantage of this new wording in future reports. Marshall E.
