PUBLICATIONS--Water-Quality Publications on Determination of Inorganic Substances In Reply Refer To: March 29, 1990 WGS-Mail Stop 412 OFFICE OF WATER QUALITY TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM 90.09 Subject: PUBLICATIONS--Water-Quality Publications on Determination of Inorganic Substances Two recent publications on the determination of inorganic substances are enclosed. (1) "Methods for Determination of Inorganic Substances in Water and Fluvial Sediments" by Marvin J. Fishman and Linda C. Friedman, Editors, and (2) "Evaluation of Methods Used from 1965 through 1982 to Determine Inorganic Constituents in Water Samples" by Linda C. Friedman and Marvin J. Fishman. The first publication is the third edition (1989) of Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations of the United States Geological Survey Book 5, Chapter A1. This edition: (1) Documents the analytical methods used in the National Water-Quality Laboratory, (2) Contains new information on inductively coupled plasma and ion exchange chromatography, (3) Is arranged alphabetically by constituent for ready reference, and (4) Should be cited in technical publications, where appropriate. The second publication is United States Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper 2293. This report compares analyses of standard reference water samples performed by different analytical methods. The resulting information has value in planning analytical support for projects and interpreting analytical results. Both publications are valuable resource information for all water-quality personnel. David A.
