The attached report provides an introduction to the basic physical and chemical principles that must be understood to interpret sediment-chemical data. It should be required reading for everyone involved in water-quality studies of ground water and surface water. The Water Resources Division's increasing emphasis on investigation of the occurrence and movement of hazardous substances in ground water and surface water requires an understanding of chemical equilibria between and within the liquid, solid, and gaseous phases of the environment. Although this primer does not directly address sediment- organic chemical interactions, the basic principles are applicable. The additional factors, primarily associated with molecular structure and physical properties of organic substances, will be addressed in a future publication. Additional copies of "A Primer on Trace Metal-Sediment Chemistry" are available from A. J, Horowitz, National Water Quality Laboratory, Doraville, Georgia.
