"A Supplement to--Methods for Collection and Analysis of Aquatic Biological and Microbiological Samples (U.S. Geological Survey Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations, Book 5, Chapter A4)" In Reply Refer To: October 23, 1979 EGS-Mail Stop 412 QUALITY OF WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 80.02 Subject: PUBLICATIONS: "A Supplement to--Methods for Collection and Analysis of Aquatic Biological and Microbiological Samples (U.S. Geological Survey Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations, Book 5, Chapter A4)" edited by Phillip E. Greeson (USGS Open-File Report 79-1279, 1979, 92 pp.). I am pleased to announce the availability of the subject publication, which contains several methods used by the U.S. Geological Survey to collect, preserve, and analyze waters for their biological and microbiological properties. The open-file report supplements the biological TWRI that was published in 1977. Included in the supplement are five new methods, a new section of selected taxonomic references for Ostracoda, and six revised methods. The new methods include: total bacteria by epifluorescence Pseudomonas aeruginosa identification and enumeration of periphytic diatoms chlorophyll a and b in phytoplankton by high pressure liquid chromatography chlorophyll a and b in periphyton by high pressure liquid chromatography The revised methods, which supercede methods published in the 1977 TWRI, include: inverted microscope method for phytoplankton glass-fiber filter method for seston gravimetric method for periphyton biomass biomass/chlorophyll ratio for plankton biomass/chlorophyll ratio for periphyton algal growth potential The biological TWRI currently is undergoing a complete revision, which should be available in about mid-l981. The supplement is being distributed automatically to district offices and to those on a special WRD mailing list. Extra copies are available upon request to the Ouality of Water Branch (Mail Stop 412, National Center, Reston, Virginia 22092). R. J.
