PUBLICATIONS--Report "Design criteria for a water-quality sampling network to assess the effects of nonpoint sources of pollution, based on data from the Susquehanna River Basin, Pennsylvania and New York" October 26, l978 QUALITY OF WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 79.04 SUBJECT: PUBLICATIONS--Report "Design criteria for a water-quality sampling network to assess the effects of nonpoint sources of pollution, based on data from the Susquehanna River Basin, Pennsylvania and New York", by D.J. Lystrom The enclosed report by D. J. Lystrom describes the suitability of available data for defining the effects of nonpoint sources of pollution on water quality in the Susquehanna River basin. Other products of the same study were distributed by Quality of Water Branch Technical Memorandums 70.08 and 78.15. This report focuses on design of a water-quality data network through a two-step process consisting of: (l) regression analysis relating dissolved solids and suspended sediment loads to basin characteristics, and (2) determination of whether an increase in data collection, either in time or space, would add materially to the accuracy of the estimated load values. Director's approval has been received for publication of the report in the World Meteorological Organization's Casebook on Network Design Practice. Please circulate the report to your personnel as you deem appropriate. Additional copies can be obtained from: D. J. Lystrom USGS National Center MS 415 Reston, VA 22092 R. J.
