QUALITY OF WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 75.08

Subject: WATER QUALITY: Technical Information - Briefing 
                        papers on aquatic biology

The Quality of Water Branch initiated in August, 1974 (QW Branch 
Technical Memorandum No. 75.03), a series of briefing papers to 
increase the awareness and understanding in the Division of the 
role and significance of biological quality. Two briefing papers 
have been released to date; they are "Why biology in water-quality 
studies?" (QW Branch Tech. Memo. No. 75.03) and "Stream biology" 
(QW Branch Tech. Memo. No. 75.04).

Attached is the third in the series of briefing papers entitled, 
"Species diversity and its measurement" by Robert C. Averett (WRD, 
Sacramento, California). Additional information on species 
diversity may be obtained by reading some of the selected 
references accompanying the attached paper or by referring to 
pages 6-26 of "Methods for the Collection and Analysis of Aquatic 
Biological and Microbiological Samples" (Slack and others, 1973, 
Tech. of Water Resources Inv., Book 5, Chapter A4).
