Two briefing papers have been released to date; they are "Why biology in water-quality studies?" (QW Branch Tech. Memo. No. 75.03) and "Stream biology" (QW Branch Tech. Memo. No. 75.04). Attached is the third in the series of briefing papers entitled, "Species diversity and its measurement" by Robert C. Averett (WRD, Sacramento, California). Additional information on species diversity may be obtained by reading some of the selected references accompanying the attached paper or by referring to pages 6-26 of "Methods for the Collection and Analysis of Aquatic Biological and Microbiological Samples" (Slack and others, 1973, Tech. of Water Resources Inv., Book 5, Chapter A4).
