PUBLICATIONS - Report--"Investigation of the occurrence and transport of arsenic in the Upper Sugar Creek Watershed, Charlotte, North Carolina, by Hugh B. Wilder February 8, 1973 QUALITY OF WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 73.13B Subject: PUBLICATIONS - Report--"Investigation of the occurrence and transport of arsenic in the Upper Sugar Creek Watershed, Charlotte, North Carolina, by Hugh B. Wilder This is to bring to your attention the subject report, published in Geological Survey Research 1972, Professional Paper. The report is the result of a special study funded by the Quality of Water Branch. High arsenic concentrations were found in Sugar Creek during the 1970 reconnaissance study of selected minor elements in surface waters of the United States, and the North Carolina District was asked to conduct a more thorough investigation to verify the high arsenic concentrations and to determine the arsenic source. Results of this study illustrate the necessity for the collection of samples that are representative of the water- sediment mixture. Although suspended-sediment concentrations were low, relatively high concentrations of arsenic were found to be associated with the sediment. The Quality of Water Branch has encouraged this type of study not only because of its usefulness to water managers, but also because it leads us to a better understanding of the distribution and mode of transport of toxic constituents in rivers and streams.
