Goerlitz and Eugene Brown Attached is one copy of the subject publication which contains the official Geological Survey methods for analysis of organic substances in water. Additional copies should be ordered through the normal Survey distribution system . As directed in WRD Memorandum 71.72, Division laboratories will use only the procedures described in this manual for analysis of substances covered, except where prior approval has been obtained from the Chief, Quality of Water Branch. You will note that on page 4 under the heading "Sample Preservation", mercuric chloride (HgC12) is recommended for the preservation of samples for nitrogen analysis. As stated in recent WRD directives, mercuric chloride should not be used, and the statement for preservation of samples for nitrogen analysis should be changed to read "Refrigerate at 4!C." Additional methods for analysis of organic substances, and modifications to methods included in this manual are already necessary and are currently being prepared.
