Subject:  SAFETY--Annual Inspection of Cableways


The discharge measuring cableway is a valuable instrument to the
hydrographer in the collection of streamflow data.  It is important
that we inspect each cableway annually, provide rehabilitation if
needed, and insure that only those cableways that are in excellent
condition are used in our work.

Please request written certification from each District Chief in
your Region that every cable in their District has been inspected
for safety this year, as required in Water Resources Division
Memorandum 85.03, and that an inspection sheet is on file in the
District for each cableway.

Please advise the Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Operations in
writing by December 15, 1988, when the above has been accomplished.
